Today we are taking you on a walk down memory lane… To celebrate our 60th birthday, we trawled the archives to create a photo book for the team to enjoy and reminisce over. This is a beautiful celebration of the family that Greens of Soham has always prided itself on being. We can’t share all the photos because there really are hundreds, but we have picked a few of our favourites that we hope you will enjoy. You may see a face or two you recognise; perhaps you will spot yourself. This is about saying thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey over the past 60 years. #memorylane #60years #milestone #britishfarming
Last week we promised to take you on a journey back through the past 60 years of Greens of Soham. We always keep a promise. Every business has a story, and for Greens of Soham, ours began back in 1966. Founded by brothers John and Andrew Green (pictured), the business started out growing vegetables and root crops on the fertile Fen soils of Cambridgeshire. From those early beginnings, a strong focus on quality, reliability and building lasting relationships helped establish Greens of Soham as a trusted name in British agriculture. We were among the first UK farming operations to supply major supermarkets, helping to lay the foundations for the business we are today. Over the years, the business continued to grow, expanding its farming operations and developing expertise across different regions and markets. Today, potatoes and beetroot remain at the heart of what we do. We work closely with growers, landowners, retailers and supply chain partners, combining decades of agricultural experience with technical expertise to deliver high-quality produce throughout the year. Our operations have grown considerably since 1966, but the importance of quality, collaboration and long-term relationships has remained constant. Many of our partnerships have lasted more than 40 years, reflecting the trust and commitment that continue to underpin our work. Nearly 60 years on, we are proud of how far we have come and excited about what the future holds. #greensofsoham #ourstory #britishfarming #ourjourney
In the world of agriculture, many jobs are repeated over and over again. In fact, ensuring consistency is at the heart of everything we do. But one thing never gets boring, no matter how many times we see it: a beautiful sunrise on the horizon. While many of you are still in bed (and rightfully so…), our team get to witness this beautiful sight, and we wouldn’t swap it for the world. #sunrise #agriculture #farmerlife #reel #farmreel
Back in the summer, we celebrated 60 years of Greens of Soham with dancing, food, music and a couple of beverages. What better way was there to make this milestone something to remember? But for us, it wasn’t just the fun we took away from that weekend back in June (though there was plenty of that); it was the stories and memories that truly touched our hearts. Over the next few days and weeks, we will be sharing some of these moments through photos we have gathered dating back over those 60 amazing years of business. We can’t wait to share the journey with you… #60years #celebrations #makingmemories #anniversary #farming
Several weeks back, Will attended the Farmers Weekly Arable Insights Live Event at Dyson Farming Research in Lincolnshire. The event brought together a fantastic team of industry experts to explore the growing challenges commercial farming businesses like ours continue to face, from changing climates to financial hurdles, to name just a couple. Will was invited to join the discussion panel and share his views on the future of farming. This year the specific focus was on ‘potatoes’, which, as you know, Will knows a thing or two about. As always, it was an insightful day, with plenty of food for thought to bring back to the team to share. Shoutout to @beanstalkglobal for taking such great photos of the event and for letting us share them on our socials. You always get Will’s best side… To find out more about the content of the event, please visit the website https://www.fwi.co.uk/sp/events/arable-insights-live. #farmingevent #photooftheday #farming #farmersweekly #dysonfarmingresearch
We have said it before, but we will say it again time and time again: here at Greens of Soham, our people are at the heart of everything we do. So it is important that our followers know who we are, not just the produce we are responsible for. A couple of weeks back, we introduced you to Will, our Managing Director. But whose turn is it today to have their 15 minutes of fame on our grid? Who is the chosen one? Today we are introducing David Humphreys, Director of our Northumberland Operations. When David moved to Northumberland in 1997, it marked the next step in a farming career that had already taken him from tractor driver and spray operator to running harvesting and planting operations in Australia and New Zealand, and then to trainee and assistant manager. Today, he looks back with pride on establishing and maintaining a complex, successful potato business in Northumberland over nearly three decades. During that time, David has been involved in the expansion into Europe, embracing technologies such as RTK guidance, new storage and grading solutions and developing its own mini-tuber facility – creating a fully integrated supply chain. Among his favourite memories are the early mini-tuber years, when teams travelled between sites across Scotland, Northumberland, Yorkshire and Norfolk in what became known as ‘Greenseed on Tour’, building friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Asked what has kept him here so long, David’s answer is simple: the autonomy, rewarding work and great people. And his advice to new starters? ‘Turn up for life’, ‘Do it now’, ‘Smile’, and ‘What can go wrong will go wrong’. #meettheteam #teammembers #greensofsoham #farming #behindthescenes
Another day, another reel showing how another piece of our machinery works. This is the red beet grader setup at Soham. Its job is to take all the fresh crop, sort it by size, and then send it into storage. The team will take the crop out again in spring 2027, but it is tucked up nicely and monitored until then. It just needs a little tlc. Our work doesn’t stop once the harvest is done… #reel #reeloftheday #reelstagram #beetroot #beetrootfarming
We talk a lot about potatoes, but beetroot isn’t getting enough attention on the Insta grid, and we can’t have that. So today it’s all about the beetroot… Greens of Soham is the UK’s largest producer of beetroot, growing premium beetroot on the fertile black fen soils of Cambridgeshire and supplying customers with consistent, high-quality produce year-round. We use a range of commercial varieties selected for qualities such as flavour, colour, and shape. Our work doesn’t stop when the beetroot leaves the field, though. Oh no, that’s a big fat myth, and we are here to bust it. Through our dedicated grading and storage facilities, we can wash, grade, and store beetroot year-round, helping us maintain a reliable supply and consistent quality for our customers. Like our spuds, we also continue to trial new varieties and growing techniques each season. #beetrootfarming #beetroot #farming #agriculture #soham
We are starting a series of Do You Know posts. Today, we are starting with: ‘Do you know what happens to potatoes that aren’t supermarket perfect?’ They don’t necessarily get thrown away. Potatoes that aren’t considered supermarket-perfect can still have plenty of value. It depends on why they don’t make the cut. For a farming business such as ours, the ‘not-so-pretty’ potatoes might be: • Sold into other markets where appearance isn’t as important, or a chef will make them into something tasty! • Used for processed potato products such as chips, crisps or other prepared potato products • Donated to Charitable food clubs and food banks • Sold as animal feed (where appropriate) • Put into Anaerobic Digesters to make green electricity! Not supermarket perfect can mean something as simple as being an unusual shape, slightly undersized, oversized or marked. It doesn’t automatically mean the potato is poor quality or yucky to eat. And this makes us happy because one thing we HATE is waste! #saynotowaste #didyouknow #agriculture #farmlife #farming
Today is World Mental Health Day, and we couldn’t let it pass us by without a mention. Why? Because farming can be demanding. Early starts, long days, and busy harvest periods like the one we are managing now can put pressure on the whole team. We say it a lot (and will keep on saying it), but our people are at the heart of everything we do, which is why looking after our team matters. Our aim has always been to create a workplace where people feel supported and can speak up when things aren’t quite right. Today, we are taking a moment to recognise every individual member of the team. But in reality, they should be recognised every day…and they are! #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #soham #farmlife #agriculture
That is a wrap on this year’s salad potato harvest! And here we have the team in Cambridge doing their final rounds… After weeks of harvesting across the fields, the final salad potatoes are now safely out of the ground. It has been another busy season for our farming teams, with plenty of behind-the-scenes work to harvest each crop at the right time and to the quality our customers expect. Now it’s time to get them to their new home, to be enjoyed by thousands of households across the country. #potatoes #saladpotato #farmimg #cambridge #potatoharvest
As we are busy harvesting the crops, it’s also the perfect time to take you back to the start of the process: the polytunnels. Many of you will know what they are; others might think they look like fancy greenhouses. And you wouldn’t be far wrong. Polytunnels are where our first-generation seed potatoes begin their journey. They provide a more controlled growing environment than outdoor growing and protect crops from adverse weather, allowing earlier planting and harvesting. We might even allow you a sneak peek inside one day… #farming #polytunnels #seedpotatos #potatoes #minitubbers
